Today's Burton Firefighter is a community service oriented citizen; highly trained with a minimum of two hundred forty (240) hours training prior to being allowed to actually enter a hostile fire environment. Yearly we require a minimum of sixty (60) hours additional training in various areas of Firefighting such as; Emergency Vehicle Driving Standards, Chemistry of Fire, Application of Fire Suppression agents, proper use and care of Safety equipment and breathing through the self-contained breathing apparatus.

Due to an ever changing enviroment the fire service must now train personnel for Weapons of Mass Destruction, which includes (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Exposives and Nuclear), Anti-Terrorism, Building Collapse, Trench Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, High Rise Rescue, Hazardous Materials Operations, Railroad Emergencies, Clandestine Methamphetamine Drug Lab Emergencies and a miriad of other emergency situations.

The Firefighters are part-time, part-paid employees who receive thirteen dollars ($13.00) per hour for those hours that an alarm requires. The use of a pager-quick alerting system notifies the appropriate Fire Station employees to respond, if available, to various types of emergencies. The firefighters are unionized as members of UAW - Local 708.

The Fire Department is a Quasi-Military Organization with one (1) Full Time Chief, one (1) Full Time Assistant Chief, one (1) one full time Senior Clerk Typist, four (4) part-paid, on call Deputy Chiefs, five (5) Battalion Chiefs, six (6) Captains, and six (6) Lieutenants, with forty four (44) Firefighter/Driver Operators. Each Officer receives many hours of additional training in management, report writing and safety. Fire Apparatus Drivers also receive additional training in the area of pump operations and water supply.

All emergency calls in Genesee County are received at Central Dispatch, located at Michigan State Police Post on Corunna Road. The proper emergency service for each call is then dispatched directly to the incident.

There were eight hundred eighty five (885) emergency fire calls in 2003, sixty eight percent (68%) of which were for fires, emergency rescue or extrication. Average property loss due to Fires amounts to over five million annually.
